What is Know Your Bible?

If you have never seen the Know Your Bible program it is a question and answer program that takes the viewers' questions and answers them directly from the Bible (video of show introduction). The panel consists of two men and a moderator to answer your questions, all with extensive knowledge of the Bible. If you have a question, you can call one of the toll-free numbers on the screen or email us to ask your question. The television program is pre-recorded. Thus, your question will not be aired immediately. Because there is usually a backlog, your questions will appear at a later date on the program.

We also offer a FREE Bible Correspondence Course to anyone who would like to receive it. You have no obligation to the program and you will not be put on a mailing list. If you choose to stop taking the course at any time, we will not pressure you in any way. At the end of every series you will receive a completion certificate for your accomplishments during the course. After that point we will send a letter to ask you if you would like to continue with the next course. If you do not wish to continue, you will not receive any more information from the Know Your Bible program.

Meet The Panel

Steve Tandy has been the pulpit minister at Northside Church of Christ in Wichita, Kansas, since 1999. Prior to that, he worked in the business world and preached part time for over 20 years. He conducts church leadership seminars and seminars to help men be better fathers. His hobbies are hunting, reading, and his grandchildren.

Louis Tandy is retired from both preaching and school teaching. He taught eighth grade English at Roosevelt Jr. High and preached at Northside Church of Christ for almost 30 years. Since his retirement, he stays busy golfing, gardening, and following Wichita State baseball and basketball.

Bill Oakley recently retired from preaching, having served churches in Kansas and Oklahoma for over forty years. From 1987 until his retirement in 1998, he was the pulpit minister at Northside Church of Christ. He continues to hold marriage and family seminars around the nation, and still does some counseling. He is an avid fisherman, and enjoys traveling the country in an RV.

Know Your Bible History

In 1981, Wayne Williams, an elder and Northside Church of Christ, returned from a trip to San Diego, California, all wound-up about a TV program he had seen there. It was called Know Your Bible, and was produced by E. Cajon Boulevard Church.

Wayne described the great success the brethren in San Diego were experiencing, and immediately began talking to all the Wichita TV stations. No time slot was available, so we put our name on the list and waited. We included some funds in the budget to prepare for the opportunity we knew would come soon. We did the same in 1982, 1983, 1984, and 1985 -- still no time slot opened up. In 1986, we decided it wasn't going to happen and left no room in the budget for a TV ministry.

In May of 1986, KSN called and said we could have the 10:00am slot beginning in a few weeks. They required a one year contract, and we estimated the annual budget to be around $60,000. The elders stepped out in faith by signing the contract and beginning preparation for Northside to produce, broadcast, and pay for a Kansas version of the Know Your Bible program. Louis Tandy and David Lawrence were selected to answer questions on the program. Steve Tandy became the moderator. W.L. Fletcher had moderated the program in San Diego for almost 15 years, and agreed to come to Wichita to coach us in what needed to be done.

In a matter or weeks, we had everything ready to go -- except the money. On June 15th, the congregation was asked to give or pledge enough money to get us going. No one (on earth) knew what the response would be. When the giving was counted, it was almost $54,000. The program was first broadcast on July 13, 1986.

How Does Know Your Bible Work?

Know Your Bible is a pre-recorded program. Questions are collected each week and recorded before air- time. It is impossible to answer questions during the broadcast they are received.

The production process works like this:

During the broadcast, volunteers stand by to answer the phones. Usually by 10:32, the phones are ringing. If the viewer has a question, the operator writes it down. If the viewer requests the Bible Correspondence Course, the phone operator gets their name and address. If the viewer offers their name and address, they receive a written answer to their question that week. All of the questions are sent to Steve Tandy, Louis Tandy and Bill Oakley and arranged into a script for taping of the program.

Every few weeks, Bill, Louis, and Steve meet at the KSN studios to tape three programs. Bill and Louis have studied the list of questions and know in what order they will be asked. The KSN production crew has prepared the "study" by setting table, chairs, and bookshelves in the middle of the studio. A director and sound technician are in the control booth, and two cameramen are in the studio operating three cameras and giving Steve time cues. After microphone and lighting checks, the director rolls the opening and Steve gets ready to welcome 20,000 homes into the study. In 28 minutes and 50 seconds, he invites them to be back next week for more of their questions on Know Your Bible. The programs are usually taped straight through, without retakes. However, the taping has been interrupted by weather alerts or special news broadcasts, or occasionally a serious flub-up. (Like the time Steve's watch alarm went off in the middle of a program.) Taping three shows usually takes about an hour and 45 minutes. KSN records the program and sends a copy to KSPR in Springfield, MO and WHBF in Rock Island, IL for broadcast there.
